  1. What is HD DVD?

  2. What is HDTV?

    HDTV stands for High Definition Television. Standard Definition Television (SDTV) shows pictures through pixels or lines. SDTV sets show 480 lines, while HDTV uses 1080 lines - double the amount of SDTV. More lines equals a richer and more defined image. HDTV has the ability to more than double your picture clarity.

    The DVD Forum is comprised of 240 companies from around the world who are leaders in entertainment, computing, consumer electronics and software. Each of these industries had unique and specific requirements for DVD’s successor. In November 2003, the DVD Forum officially recognized HD DVD as the next-generation DVD format for high capacity, high definition discs.

  4. Who came up with HD DVD?

    In November 2003, the DVD Forum selected HD DVD as the next-generation DVD format. Its 240 membership is comprised of companies from around the world who are leaders in movies and entertainment, computing, consumer electronics and software.

  5. If I buy an HD DVD player, do I have to replace my DVD collection?

    Toshiba HD DVD players are designed to be backwards compatible with your current DVD and CD collection. So, you can continue to enjoy that library of DVDs and CDs you’ve spent years collecting.

  6. When will HD DVD launch in Canada?

    Toshiba’s HD-XA1 and HD-A1 hit the Canadian market in spring 2006.  Our second generation models, HD-XA2 and HD-A2 will be available in December 2006.
